4 Ways To Cure Your Headache

Honest speaking, I tend to get headaches. Might be because I'm on the computer a lot or perhaps it happens sometimes when my diet is off. For many, when that headache hits, it's time to reach for the Excedrin or other pain stopper. The problem is that it's not a good habit to get into, especially if you can cure your headache fast and naturally.

1. Relax your breathing. Due to the anticipated pain, a migraine attack makes you anxious and might bring about a panic attack as well which will only worsen your condition. This feeling of anxiety and panic will increase your heart rate and make you feel as if you are choking and your breathing is labored.

If you are feeling an attack is about to come when you are outside your home or office, do not panic and go to a cool place preferably where there is very little light or just take a seat in a shaded area and cover your eyes (putting on sunglasses will do). You need to relax your breathing so as not to aggravate your situation. Initially, take a long deep breath slowly and exhale slowly. Do this for 4 to 5 times more but you need to concentrate on your lungs filling up with air when you inhale and again as air is leaving your lungs when you exhale. By the time you reach the 4th turn you feel that your breathing has relaxed and even your heart rate has calmed and slowed down. You might also feel sleepy but if you are not yet at home you can take this time to move slowly and grab a cab and get home as fast as you can or you can let the migraine pass by staying where you are.

2. Get into a dark room. If your migraine is starting, get into a dark and quiet place. If the migraine is in progress or has already started, take your medications before looking for a place to relax. When you have found a place to lie down and relax, cover your eyes with a blindfold, towel, handkerchief or scarf but leave your eyes open. Shutting your eyes will only increase the pain instead of getting a relief.

3. Lavender oil. Pure lavender oil is known for its medicinal properties and its soothing and calming scent is helpful when you are suffering from migraine. When you feel an attack is coming place a drop of lavender oil on your temples, behind the ears and several drops on the pillow you will be using. The scent of lavender when inhaled will help ease your migraine pain almost immediately

4. If it's possible, just to take a warm bath or shower. If doing a bath, try to have some soothing music playing (no words). You could then take a little nap-this could also make it worse depending on what kind of headache you have.

How To Deal With the Earache

Earaches are a common condition that can affect people. If you are suffering from earache, then you should go to see a doctor as soon as possible. But before that, here are some tips as to how you can cope with the pain, or even cure the earache.

1.) For immediate relief, try using a hairdryer to blow warm air into the affected ear. The warm air will soothe the pain that's inside. This method is particularly effective when the person is suffering from Swimmer's Ear.

2.) If earache-affected person is suffering from an infection, garlic oil is recommended for curing the condition. Gently warm a few drops of garlic oil first, then pour it down the affected ear canal. The garlic oil will cleanse the ear, soothe the pain and will also help fight the infection.

3.) Earwax can also be the cause of earaches, due to an excessive buildup of the substance inside the ear canal. In order to cure this, you can use a Hydrogen Peroxide solution. Pour a few drops of it inside the ear, then lie down on the side for it to dissolve the earwax. After a few minutes, when it feels like the process is complete, drain the solution and the dissolved earwax into a piece of tissue paper.

4.) Heat pads and warm towels can also help in soothing earaches. Simply place a heat pad or a towel soaked in warm water against the affected ear.
5.) You can also try pouring some warm olive oil into your ear to ease the pain. Olive oil can clean your ears, fight the infection that just might be present inside your ear canal, and most importantly soothe the ears.

The important Vitamins

Vitamins make people's bodies work properly. Although you get vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat every day, some foods have more vitamins and minerals than others. The different vitamins have different function.

Vitamin C has long been associated with a stronger immune system and as a result is one of the most popular supplements taken in the UK today. However, the results of a recent study on guinea pigs suggest that Vitamin C has another equally important role in early brain development.

Vitamin C can be found in vegetables like capsicums and potatoes and in fruits like the citrus group and in strawberries and kiwifruit. If you are feeling tired and susceptible to infection you could be low in this vitamin.

If you notice your night vision is failing and you suffer from respiratory disorders you may have a lack of vitamin A. This nutrient is essential for cell development and maintaining vision and skin health. Oily fish, egg yolks, carrots and pumpkin are all good supplies.
Lack of vitamin E doesn't really cause any symptoms but this essential ingredient will mop up the free radicals that are the main cause of aging. If you eat nuts, seeds or vegetable oils every day, you will be getting enough.

Folate is needed by the body, but more so for women who are thinking about getting pregnant. Extra folate is required before and during pregnancy to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida; supplements are recommended during this time. Good sources are green leafy vegetables, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, liver and pulses.

Most of the B vitamins are found in protein rich foods like pork, poultry, eggs and fish. They all tend to interrelate together and are needed to regenerate DNA they are integral to growth and development.

Vitamin D is essential in aiding the the absorption of calcium, the best source is from exposure to sunlight. Just be careful to go out in the sun before 11am and after 3pm to avoid the hottest part of the day.

How Much Protein is in an Egg?

By John Barban

Eggs are an excellent source of protein and relatively cheap too. They have a very high biological value and a full complement of essential and non-essential amino acids. In short, if you wanted a complete and easy to absorb protein source look no further than eggs.

With that said there are a few considerations you might want to make when buying and preparing eggs. First of all some of the protein in an egg is found in the yolk, so if you separate your whites and discard the yolk you will also be lowering the protein content of each egg you purchased and therefore increasing the price per gram of protein.

Second point is that eggs come in different sizes, and therefore the amount of protein they contain is different. For example the US department of agriculture categorizes eggs as small, medium, large, extra large, and jumbo. Each size has a different amount of protein as follows:

Size of Egg Grams of Protein Grams of Protein

(whole egg including yolk) (White Only)

Small 4.8 2.7

Medium 5.5 3.2

Large 6.3 3.6

Extra Large 7 4

Jumbo 7.9 4.6

As you can see about 58% of the protein in an egg is contained in the white, the rest is in the yolk. So if you like to separate the yolk out of your egg you're losing 42% of the protein in each egg. This is not very cost effective if you're eating eggs for their protein content. Every time you throw away a yolk you're literally throwing away almost half the protein in the egg as well.

The yolk of an egg provides lots of nutrients that your body needs, there is no reason to throw it away. The cholesterol and fat content of the yolk will only contribute a small portion to your overall daily intake with no detrimental effects.

Scrambled, poached, sunny side up, omelet, over easy, over hard, Benedict, whatever. Eggs are a great way to get your protein requirement for the day.

For the most up to date answer on the question of how much protein you need per day to build muscle check out the aptly named book How Much Protein.

Eating a healthy diet

Are you constantly tired, lethargic and stressed out? Are you concerned with the lifestyle you lead may cause danger to your body? If your answer is, "YES!" then this is the perfect article for you. Here are some useful tips to maintain a healthy diet.
Skipping a meal or waiting too long for your next meal causes your blood sugar levels to drop, which causes you to feel shaky and weak. You will find it hard to concentrate on your tasks, your energy levels drop and your mood changes. It is the carbohydrates that determine your blood sugar levels and by eating complex carbohydrates you can help stabilize the sugar levels and hunger pains. Eating sweets, chocolates, cakes and biscuits do not help as they are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and cause your blood sugar levels to rise rapidly and then just as quick to drop.
To stop these types of sugar level fluctuations you should choose starchy foods that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index tells you how quickly certain carbohydrates will trigger a rise in your blood sugar levels. It is best to go for foods that have a low glycemic index count such as wholemeal foods and oats.
As mentioned earlier you should not skip breakfast because your blood sugar level drops at night so it is important to replenish your body when you wake up in the morning. You are also likely to snack on sugary foods like sweets or chocolates throughout the morning.
Lunch should be your largest meal of the day so you have the rest of the day to work it off. Try not to eat lunch that is high in carbohydrates as this will make you feel sluggish for the rest of the afternoon. Eat a protein rich meal with some fruit or a salad and that will also go towards your five a day for fruit and vegetables.
It is good to have a snack between meals, say mid morning and mid afternoon. Rather than picking up a chocolate bar or a packet of crisps, go for a low-fat snack like fruit, dried fruit, yogurt or some nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds are a good source of protein and help you feel fuller for longer.
Finally drink plenty of fluid during the day, preferably water. Keeping hydrated will stop your energy levels from dipping and stop you from getting headaches. Try to drink about eight glasses of water throughout the day and cut down on caffeine drinks. If you start drinking the recommended amount of water from today, you will feel more energized and alert within two weeks. To maintain a full healthy life, take up an activity to compliment your diet like walking for 30 minutes each day five times a week.
The ideal diet would consist of 50% whole grains and beans, 30% vegetables, 10% seafood, and 10% salads and fruits. If you choose to eat breakfast eat a small breakfast. Try having whole grain toast with honey or apple butter. There is no reason to use butter. Stop wasting your money eating out for lunch and take your luck to work instead. There are many different lunch options you can prepare for yourself. You don't have to live off of sandwiches at lunch time. Supper should be the main meal of the day, so enjoy it! Want an example of what a low fat calorie supper would be? Well, start out with brown rice or whole wheat pasta. Have some cooked dried beans with herbs. Enjoy a 6 ounce portion of your favorite seafood, green or yellow fresh vegetable stir fried with spices for flavor, some whole grain bread, and a salad topped with non-fat or low fat dressing. Finish your meal with some fresh or frozen unsweetened fruit for desert. This would be an excellent low fat calorie supper that you can eat as much as you would like!

Back pain relief- Strengthen your back muscles

There is much research supporting the theory that proper exercise is the best solution to eliminating back pain. Exercise weak muscles can be strengthen and retrained. Strong, balanced muscles support the spinal column and helping to correct any dysfunction.
Exercise has been greatly recommended as the best treatment option since it promotes natural healing by strengthening the muscles. Doctors, athlete trainers, and physical therapists have proven this to be true but not necessarily guarantee that it will work positively for you as it has for them.

Nevertheless, the following exercises for lower back pain may provide you with the right back pain treatment. In order to ensure correct execution you should probably get proper consultation from an exercise expert:

1. Arm circles
Do some arm circling motions to loosen up your shoulders. Doing this at the beginning of the exercise regimen and at the end will serve as your warm up and cooling down exercises.

2. Strength Building Exercises
This refers to low-impact aerobic exercises which should be limited to every third day, to realize the healing benefits. Exercises for lower back pain can build back muscle strength and promote a good posture where stomach muscles are kept pulled in. Walking and exercises done in swimming pools are the most recommended form for this type of activity.

3. Squats or deep knee bends
To do this, you have to stand with your back propped up against the wall, and slowly bend your knees until you reach a position that has the semblance of sitting on an imaginary chair. Hold it for a moment then slowly pull yourself up to a starting position. Do this repeatedly for about thirty minutes. If you can maintain a good balance, another way to do these exercises for lower back pain, is by assuming the sitting position even without the aid of a wall.

4. Arm and leg lifts
Lie flat on the floor and keep your back straight without arching your lower back too much but keeping it only a little off the ground. Elevate each limb off the floor one at a time and keep it raised up to a count of 5 or 10.
Do whichever you can manage before alternating it with the other limb. Execute everything slowly and as soon as you get the hang of it, modify the lifting exercise by lying prone or face down with your stomach on the ground. Another modification is by doing the lifting position while seated.

5. Crunches
Do some crunches but not necessarily rushing into full sit-ups. However, if you can already manage to do the straight crunches, allow the tip of one elbow to reach the opposite knee as you come up to a sitting position.
However, before embarking on these exercises for lower back pain as your treatment option, make sure you consulted this out with your doctor and with an exercise expert.
These exercises are only a suggestion. You should first find a capable instructor. Start with slow gentle movements and avoid any exercise that causes the slightest discomfit.

It doesn't take long to do this exercise every day and it will pay huge dividends in the long run. Stack the deck in your favor and commit to improving your posture for a healthier happier life.

For many people, heat treatments work best when combined with physical therapy and/or exercise. This type of therapy is appealing to many people because it is a non-invasive and non-medicinal form of lower back pain relief. However, therapy with heat can be used in conjunction with other pain relievers, such as over-the-counter pills. While ice therapy is most helpful during the first two days following a muscle injury, heat therapy is more important to the healing process afterward.

Heat therapy for lower back pain can be achieved in the form of warm/hot baths, hot tubs or saunas, as well as several dry or moist heat therapy products such as heating pads, heat wraps, heat inducing creams and warm gel packs which can also provide relief. There are several different brands of cordless heated back wraps on the market which can provide up to six hours of deep-penetrating heat to relieve sore, stiff muscles and joints without requiring proximity to an ac outlet, therefore allowing you to go about your daily activities.

Heat therapy is just one of the many treatments available for lower back pain. It is an option you should explore when you do suffer from back pain or other ailments. As always, it is a good idea to consult with your family physician before trying any of these treatments.

Cause and effect of obesity

Obesity is a growing problem not just in America – but all across the world. We are constantly attracted to consuming foods that are high in fat and have a negative effect on our bodies. Also we are not exercising or doing anything that is remotely considered to be exercising. By doing this we are letting ourselves become overweight.

Obesity affects various systems in the human body when in an aggravated condition. Adverse effects of obesity can be seen in humans. The following are

Cardiovascular Problems:
Since there is a direct link between the accumulation of fat in the body and the blood and heart systems, various problems can be created. High blood pressure is one of commonest problems, usually caused by obesity. High cholesterol and atherosclerosis (blockage of the arteries) are some other commonly seen problems in obese people. Also, due to inflammation of arteries, the blood supply to the heart may also be reduced thereby creating a greater risk of heart failure. In fact, more than 12% of congestive heart failure cases are caused due to obesity.

Endocrine and Reproductive Problems:
The presence of extra fat in the body also hampers the production of many hormones. This happens due to presence of cells which impair the production of some hormones. Since the abdominal fat present in the patient impairs the production of insulin digesting cells, it is said to cause Diabetes mellitus type 2. Also, other problems like polycystic ovarian syndrome, menstrual disorders, infertility, etc. are known to occur in the reproductive system. Even in pregnancy, complications may occur which may also lead to birth defects in the baby.

Cancer:
Medical researchers have not been able to pinpoint the exact cause of this finding but it has already been established that being obese increases the risk of cancer to a great extent, especially in women. Chances of developing colon cancer, including other types of cancers like breast cancer, oesophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, gall bladder cancer, etc are also found to be common in obese women. In addition, one can develop stomach, prostate gland, endometrial, ovarian or cancer of the cervix. Obese people need to take special care of their kidneys.

Neurological Problems:
Neurological problems are not a direct effect of increased body fat. Since obesity can cause problems like hypertension and diabetes which reduce the blood flow to the heart and the brain, there are various problems that may occur. Strokes may also occur due to lower blood flow to the brain, potentially causing impairment. Due to improper functioning of the brain, other problems like dementia, headache, meralgia paresthetica (pain in outer thigh due to injury to nerve), carpal tunnel syndrome and idiopathic intracranial hypertension can also crop up.

Musculoskeletal Problems:
Obesity can also cause a great stress on the human skeletal system. Since the bones and the skeletal frame have to bear far more body weight, it can be stressed out which causes problems like osteoarthritis. Lower back pain is also caused as an indirect effect of obesity, osteoarthritis and diabetes. Gout may also develop due to accumulation of uric acid in the joints, usually the big toe of the foot. This condition causes a great, unbearable pain.

Respiratory Problems:
Obesity causes the tissues to become soft and the muscle tone to become reduced around the airways, problems can arise in the respiratory system too, the commonest being obstructive sleep apnea. In addition, obesity hypoventilation syndrome is an extended form since the amount of oxygen reaching the lungs decreases. Asthma, another ailment can also occur because of obesity.

Gastrointestinal Problems:
Obesity causes problems like gastro-oesophageal reflux disease in which there is heartburn due to a reflux that is caused by mucosal damage in the oesophagus. Fatty inflammation of the liver is also an outcome. In addition, formation of stones in the gall bladder and hernia can also occur in obese people.

Genitourinary Problems:
Due to obesity, the development and the functioning of the genital organs can be affected to a great extent. Urinary incontinence, chronic renal failure with slow loss of kidney function, hypogonadism (improper functioning of sexual organs in males and females) and erectile dysfunction or impotence, can be caused as a result of obesity.

Psychological Problems:
Obesity causes a lot of psychological problems in patients as they have to face a lot of social stigma due to their appearance. This can lead to depression and low self esteem. Body dysmorphic disorder or too much botheration about body parts also causes a lot of stress and social isolation. In some adverse cases of psychological pressures, people may even commit suicide.

Skin Problems:
Though not really fatal, obesity also causes various skin problems in the patients like stretch marks, Acanthosis (hyper-pigmentation of the skin in folds), Lymphedema or fluid retention in various body parts, including Cellulitis, carbuncle or intertrigo.
All these problems are a direct or indirect consequence of obesity. There are so many problems that can be caused some of which are reversible and some irreversible. Obesity, like any other disease must be handled with care and caution!

5 tips for losing weight

Have you still worried about your weight?here are 5 tips for losing weight.
1. It is important to avoid self-sabotaging thoughts. It is a fact that self-sabotaging thoughts will do more harm than taking fake diet pills. How can you reach your weight loss goals if the thoughts in your head are constantly telling you that it is impossible to do that things you need to do to lose weight.
Telling yourself that you cannot do sit-ups and push-ups is probably an overstatement. This is true especially if you have never tried these workouts!
Instead of thinking you can't do push-ups, set your goal small. For a beginner thinking you can do thirty push-ups can be overwhelming.
For example, start with 10 push-ups. If you complete these, congratulate yourself on your success. After your success, simply add one or two extra push-ups every day to your routine until you reach the magic number you set (in this case 30). The point is that if you start small, reaching your goals can be relatively easy!
Do not allow yourself to think too much. Simply take action and DO it! It is better to spend time on some exercise than to sit around spending your time ridiculing and criticizing yourself.
Doing exercise will help yo to burn fat and lose weight, while sitting around criticizing yourself will simply decrease your self-esteem.
2. Getting support is the second way to have success. Great support is essential to keeping you focused, determined, and motivated. If you lack support, you will not be able to be successful in your weight loss attempts.
It is important that the support team you use are friends and family who understand your goals and support them. Along with friends and family, a weight loss program which offers support to its members through support groups or forums is vital.
Through forums, you are able to get support and tips from others trying to lose weight and from experts.
Limit the time you spend for the negative people in your life who can only find your faults. Instead, surround yourself with you supportive friends and family.
3. Work It Out,Make the most of your time at the gym: Any kind of cardio activity, ideally one that incorporates the upper and lower body at the same time, is great. For example, there's a machine called the VersaClimber, which is a vertical climbing machine -- it's like a StairMaster with a feature that incorporates the upper body too.
4. Know Yourself,The best time of day to work out is whenever you feel best and when you're most likely to be consistent. If you're a morning person, hit the gym before work. But if you've ever considered hanging a sign at your desk that says "Don't talk to me 'til I've finished my coffee," an evening workout may be better for you.
5. Stay Hydrated,Drink only water while working out. If you must drink a sports drink, dilute it with one part drink to three parts water. If you drink sports drinks on their own, they're so concentrated that any vitamins or electrolytes you think you're benefitting from are actually going straight through you.
Losing weight will be made a lot easier if you follow these tips.

Snoring Treatment

Snoring is a symptom that is caused by abnormalities in the soft tissues of the throat or wrong sleeping posture in which a narrow airway obstructs smooth breathing thus causing sound vibrations during sleep. Snoring can disturb a good night's sleep of a person or a partner.
It is a common sleeping phenomenon in most people and there are many who think that snoring does not have a cure. Snoring is not a problem to be afraid of, it does have its treatments and hence a person can cure himself of this habit if he wants to. One needs to identify the cause and then apply the remedy for a snoring free sleep.
There are some self help tips like sleeping on one's side, elevating the head of the bed, limitations of alcohol and medications, clearing nasal passages and losing weight. If a person sleeps on his side the problem of snoring may disappear altogether.
While some people turn to medications to treat their difficulty sleeping, there are many natural remedies that provide relief without harmful side effects. Making lifestyle changes and avoiding substances that contribute to insomnia often works well.
Relaxation techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy can be beneficial. Melatonin and some herbs like chamomile and valerian are other drug free remedies.
How to cure insomnia is something that can be done in many different ways, and you have to find out what works for you.
The first tip would be to lose weight if you are overweight. Fat tissues accumulate in all parts of the body - including the throat. So when you sleep the air passage is narrower by the small amount of fat and vibrations easily appear. Just losing a few pounds is enough to see the difference.
Don't sleep on your back. This is the posture that brings snoring sounds during the night. To get in the right position you can make use of anti snore pillows, or you can even put a lemon on your back! This way when you lay on your back in the middle of your sleep, the discomfort caused by the lemon will make you shift back to your original position.

How to Deal With Eating Disorders

An eating disorder is a psychological condition. The eating behavior of anorexia nervosa and bulimia are the most common and involve excessive or not enough food intake. Whether a person eats too much or avoids eating, the result is negative effects to one's physical body, but also to their mental health. In any case eating disorder treatment should be sought.
Usually an eating disorder is made up from a combination of things affecting someone's life. They believe they cannot cope with certain situations, feelings and emotions but this can change if you seek the right help and support on how you deal with these emotions and feelings
Low self esteem, lack of confidence, relationships, problems in work or with friends, problems wit h school, college and universities, sexual or physical abuse are all important factors that can trigger an eating order. Sometimes it can just be the fact that someone feels fat or ugly and their feelings of not being good enough can lead to a problem with food which can develop into more dangerous eating disorders.
Sadly it can take a long time before you seek help and realize that you have lost control over food.
Eating disorders aren't just confined to young girls; young men can suffer from this problem too. It can affect anyone regardless of age, sex, culture. It will also affect family members and friends of the person suffering from an eating disorder.
Once you realize that your eating disorders have taken control over your life, you need to seek help and get the support that is needed for you, your family and friends.
Eating behavior treatment should begin with understanding that an individual does not have to be underweight to have an eating disorder. Men do suffer from eating disorders and those with eating disorders are not vain individuals. An eating disorder can be a life threatening condition. After getting gaining some understanding of eating disorders the individual suffering needs the support and encourage to seek eating disorder treatment. The individual should seek first the services of their family physician that will diagnose the condition accurately and outline any medical problems accompanying it. Problems such as depression, anxiety or substance abuse can be some of the areas needing treatment. The physician may then recommend such eating disorder treatment as nutritional counseling, psychotherapy, residential treatment or support groups.
An eating disorder is a psychological condition and the severity can vary, but what is certain about every individual suffering from eating disorders is that they need to seek immediate eating disorder treatment before it is too late.

To stop the blood flow to the affected area, holding ice over the region for 15-20 minutes can be rewarding. Use wipes or moistened papers after a bowel movement instead of using dry papers. In addition, remember to consume plenty of fluids. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day to prevent too many solids from forming in the digestive track.

It is a good idea to consult a physician if you have agonizing symptoms that you think are because you have hemorrhoids. A physician will always know what to do better than the average layman but there are many people who have cured there hemorrhoids naturally. If your hemorrhoids haven't reached an advanced stage you should have no trouble curing them naturally either.

There are a number of ointments, creams, and drugs to address the issue of hemorrhoids. Although these would quickly alleviate pain, soothe itching and discomfort, these are of little help. Laxatives and stool softeners may also be helpful. They assuage pain during heavy bowel movements and also soften the stool. However, if you overuse them they can cause watery or running diarrhea. It is always a good idea to ask a doctor or specialist if it is a good idea to be taking laxatives and how much is appropriate. It is also a good idea to ask your doctor about any other hemorrhoid treatment you are thinking of trying.

Home treatment of hemorrhoids often include changing your lifestyle, diet and the use of home remedies. Instead of eating junk-type fatty foods, eat foods that are rich in fiber. This means that you should eat more fruits, vegetables, salads and whole grains. It is advisable not let constipation occur in the first place which means drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day. Take lukewarm bath up to 3 times a day for 15-20 minutes after a bowel movement. Another useful treatment is to apply aloe vera on the affected area to reduce burning and itching. If you take the time to do one or more of these things there is no doubt that you will notice a dramatic improvement in the symptoms and appearance of your cellulite so take the time to give yourself the gift of health and well-being.

Ways To Build Muscle

1. Nutritional planning
This is possibly the most important aspect that is neglected by many; they just eat whatever comes, without realizing that they could be doing so much more to aid their search for lean muscle gain. While the normal (healthy) diet is perfectly acceptable and will no real harm to your quest, it also will not aid your quest incredibly either. The most important ingredient that is left out is Protein; this is the building block of every muscle. So naturally you must have more if you want to create more lean muscle mass and then sustain it properly.
Also before and after your workout it is most important to get a good source of Protein and Carbohydrates, both which are used up during your workout. You must stock up before and then replace your energy straight after your workout; this is the point where your body most needs re-fueling. Usually this is done by drinking home blended shakes, (usually whey protein + a good source of carbohydrates) make up the core components.
2. Sleep
This probably is a given to most people, but sleep is the main chance you get to let your muscles relax and recuperate, helping you during your next muscle building workout routine. You also may not know that most muscle growth happens after training, while you are just chilling out. So it is important to get as much sleep as possible, to maximize your previous efforts.
3. Rest periods between training
While in the middle of a training program, remember that it is important to schedule enough rest time in between workouts, otherwise you will burn your muscles out before you have started. Because to gain muscle you will need to push your muscles hard over a fairly long period of time, burning them out in a matter of days/weeks will serve no purpose in your desire to gain muscle, just wipe you out and waste your own time.
4. there are four foods that can help you achieve these goals. Let's go through each one in order and see what each one brings to the table.
Protein
The first food that is fairly useful is any food that has a significant amount of protein in it. Candidates for this nutrient would be lean meats such as chicken or fish, also turkey as a potential. Milk is a good source of protein for muscle building activities.
Carbohydrates
The next source of food type is carbohydrates, there are a few foods in this category that can be useful. One of these is brown rice, because it is natural , provides bran and fiber, and is a stable carbohydrate.
Fats
The third food that would be beneficial is if you had a small amount of fat in the diet. Be sure that you use natural oil sources, such as olive oil and nut oils such as almond oil. Nuts as a source of oil for your diet would also be appropriate.
Fruits and Vegetables
The fourth food type which overlaps the carbohydrate is fruits and vegetables. In that area, apples are a good all around fruit for providing a balance of carbohydrate and fiber. Also on the vegetable side, vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, cruciferous vegetables.

How to quit smoking

Smoking is injurious to health, might be a minor statement for some, but for those who have realized the ill effects of smoking it is a step towards quitting smoking. Tips quitting smoking are many and all of them have almost the same kind of effect, the thing that matters the most is the willingness of an individual to get rid of this life threatening habit. One of the most effectual quit smoking tips is to deal with ones mind in such a manner that the confidence level of the body never goes down when in the process of quitting smoking. To stop smoking is an extremely big exercise that requires a lot of dedication and patience.
One method to stop smokig addiction that has been around for awhile is hypnosis. This technique has had mixed results, with many smokers swearing by it, and others claiming that it did nothing for them. Hypnosis techniques usually involve a "re-programming" of the brain to convince the smoker that he/she is no longer dependent on cigarettes, and does not need or desire to smoke any longer. Positive affirmations are usually included also -- for example, "I will not smoke today; I do not need a cigarette to get through my day." There are a couple drawbacks to this method, however. Hypnosis sessions or seminars are usually rather expensive, and this keeps many smokers from trying this method. Also, as mentioned before, this method has not been effective at all for some smokers, and they keep on smoking without any change.

Another way to stop smoke addiction is the use of substitute items for cigarettes. For example, instead of smoking a cigarette, a person may suck on a drinking straw, or even a lollipop. For some smokers, it is often the case that the feeling of having something in their mouth is all they crave, as opposed to the nicotine and other chemicals. Replace the cigarette with something else and the habit disappears for some people. The recent innovation of the electric cigarette has had great success for many people. However, the fact that it still looks like a cigarette has turned many people off, and it may draw some strange looks if you're out in public with it.
3.Exercise. Having a regular exercise will be an effective way to get boredom out of your life and it also helps in making good use of your time than sitting by the patio with a cigarette on hand. Aside from keeping you away from idle time, it also helps you keep in shape and stay healthy.
4. Avoid parties and places that you would likely light a cigarette. This is important especially if you are just starting to carry out your plan to finally quit the habit. It may take a little sacrifice but it will bring you good rewards in the end.
5.Seek help from nature. As there are many herbs that help our body heal from common ailments and diseases, there are also herbs that can help you overcome the addiction of nicotine. Among these herbs that are said to be effective in lowering down your nicotine addiction are Lobelia, Mimosa Tea, Korean Ginseng and Avena Sativa. You can even find them in some health stores. However, you have to seek expert advice as well because some herbs may also cause harm if used excessively.
6.Get relief with acupuncture. Acupuncture is an ancient practice that has been known to heal a lot of health problems and it has also been found to be effective in putting an end to smoking. What is good about this practice is that, aside from helping you in your quest to stop smoking naturally, it also helps you relax, relieve you from stress, and bring back the energy you need for your tired body. Acupuncture helps you quit smoking by reducing your cravings to smoke.

The Causes of Hair Loss in Women

The American Academy of Dermatology has found that due to the causes of hair loss in women, 30 million women in the country are being affected by this problem. The most common cause of female hair loss is their hormones and the medical factors and conditions. There are particular causes that distinguish hair loss in men from that in women.

Common Causes of Hair Loss in Women

The interrupted growth cycle of hair in females is disturbing. According to the experts, tresses generally grow ay the rate of half an inch a month, and every strand of the hair has a growth phase of about 2 to 6 years.
Once that is reached, the hair is said to "rest" for a certain while with the follicle from which it sprang, soon beginning to grow once more with a new strand. This is how the cycle continues well into the old age. Hair loss is caused by a genetic predisposition of androgens.

Female Baldness:
One of the primary causes of hair loss in women is the same as it is in men. Often, they suffer from androgenetic alopecia that is a particular kind of reaction to the presence of male hormones in the human body.

This is concerned with the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which is not very hair friendly. Where it concerns women, the pattern baldness may start at a later age with the effects being less severe on account of the presence of the female hormones.
Telogen Effluvium: This is the second of the most important causes of hair loss in women that commonly affects women. However, the very nature of the condition is surprising.

The telogen effluvium is affected by an overall thinning of the hair and receding hairline in the scalp. It is affected on account of some distressing event that you might have encountered. It causes sufficient stress to interfere with the normal growing cycle of the hair.
Pregnancy is an example of an event that can interfere with the hair growth cycle of the body. This is why, the occurrence of telogen effluvium is evident in women.

Surgery and illness:
This is a potential cause of hair-loss in women and some of these diseases are thyroid and diabetes. Under or hyper activity of the thyroid gland can be seen as a major influence in women. Also, you need to look at conditions that put you through a lot of physical stress such as high fever or important surgeries.

Genetic Cause of Female Hair Loss
Androgenetic alopecia or female pattern baldness is a common recurrence that is a potential cause of female hair loss in about 15% of the female population in USA.
The chemical process works in the manner that the dehydro testosterone cause hair follicles to shut down as women experience a general thinning of their hair. This is in contrast to the process of balding or hair loss in males who have bald patches and a receding hair line showing.

It will also help keep your skin cells young and fresh. Foods that pack a powerful punch of nutrition are now being linked to more youthful appearances and better health in aging men and women.

The trick to getting these valuable antioxidants and fatty acids is to eat a diet with a variety of fresh produce. Steer toward foods that have rich coloring, such as dark colored grapes, blueberries, spinach, broccoli, carrots, and even some more adventurous new-comers to the market such as acai berry products.

You can also take a high quality fish oil supplement in order to get the fatty acids that are beneficial to your entire body, skin included.

Water
The benefits of drinking pure, clear water cannot be overstated. Water has been described as the elixir of life and it definitely deserves such a high accolade.

If these two litres are not replaced then, when the level of water in your body drops by just 2%, you are on the path to dehydration. This will result in dry, dull skin prone to fine lines and wrinkles as well as sagging jowls.
Serious skincare requires action and perhaps a change in lifestyle. Brighten up your diet and drink your two litres of pure, clear water each day and you will be well on your way to amazing looking skin.

Foods to eat to stop diarrhea

Diarrhea is most commonly caused by viral infections, parasites or bacterial toxins.[1] In sanitary living conditions where there is ample food and a supply of clean water, an otherwise healthy patient usually recovers from viral infections in a few days. However, for ill or malnourished individuals diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration and can become life-threatening without treatment.

Bacteria and parasites. Contaminated food or water can transmit bacteria and parasites to your body. Parasites such as Giardia lamblia and cryptosporidium can cause diarrhea. Common bacterial causes of diarrhea include campylobacter, salmonella, shigella and Escherichia coli. This type of diarrhea can be common for people traveling to developing countries.

Tap water (A common mistake travelers make is to avoid tap water but to place ice cubes in a beverage. Contaminated ice is still able to transmit disease. Do not use ice cubes.)Giardia parasite: Infection with Giardia (called giardiasis) is easily spread through child-care settings and contaminated water supplies, especially water parks and pools (the bacteria are resistant to chlorine treatment), children's "touch tanks" in aquariums and museums, and contaminated streams or lakes.

The common illness, which may last several days, often called "intestinal flu," is often due to one of a number of viruses that infect the bowel, making it weep fluid. The excess of fluid in the bowel leads to liquid stools. The inflammation may also be associated with cramping abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Other common infectious diarrheas may be caused by bacteria. These bacteria irritate the bowel and make it pour out fluid. The inflammation may also be associated with cramping abdominal pain. "Travelers' diarrhea" is due to particular bacteria common in certain areas of the world.

The BRAT diet works well for all ages. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast are mild "binders," and they can be added to your regular diet. Some doctors also say to add plain yogurt to the list. Foods to avoid include milk products, fried foods, fatty meats, cookies, chocolate, spicy foods and citrus fruits

10 best ways for weight loss

1.Learn more about Energy needs and weight loss,Your body uses food for energy. It stores any excess energy as fat. This means if you eat more food than your body needs for daily activities and cell maintenance, you will gain weight. To lose weight, you need to get your body to use up these stores of fat. The most effective way to do this is to:
• reduce the amount of calories you eat
• increase your levels of activity.

2.Introduce changes gradually.Small changes can make a big difference. One extra biscuit a week can lead you to gain 5lb a year – cut that biscuit out of your diet and you'll lose the same amount.
You are also more likely to stick to, say, swapping full-fat milk for semi-skimmed or making time for breakfast each morning than a diet that sets rules for all foods.
You should think of weight loss in terms of permanently changing your eating habits. While weight-loss goals are usually set in term of weeks, the end game is to sustain these changes over months and years.

3. Make one social outing this week an active one. Pass on the movie tickets and screen the views of a local park instead. Not only will you sit less, but you'll be saving calories because you won't chow down on that bucket of popcorn. Other active date ideas: Plan a tennis match, sign up for a guided nature or city walk (check your local newspaper), go cycling on a bike path, or join a volleyball league or bowling team.

4.Do more exercise,Needless to say, exercise is crucial to weight loss. You can’t expect to sit on the couch all day, sip water and lose weight. Join a good gym that lets you work with weights. It will help you build muscle and your metabolism rate will increase. You’ll soon see the fat come off and in its place muscle will develop.

5.Find an online weight-loss buddy. A University of Vermont study found that online weight-loss buddies help you keep the weight off. The researchers followed volunteers for 18 months. Those assigned to an Internet-based weight maintenance program sustained their weight loss better than those who met face-to-face in a support group.

6.Discover your dietary point of preference. If you work hard to control your weight, you may get pleasure from your appearance, but you may also feel sorry for yourself each time you forgo a favorite food. There is a balance to be struck between the immediate gratification of indulgent foods and the long-term pleasure of maintaining a desirable weight and good health. When you have that balance worked out, you have identified your own personal dietary pleasure "point of preference." This is where you want to stay.

7.Don't eat with a large group. A study published in the Journal of Physiological Behavior found that we tend to eat more when we eat with other people, most likely because we spend more time at the table. But eating with your significant other or your family, and using table time for talking in between chewing, can help cut down on calories -- and help with bonding in the bargain.

8.Eat fruit instead of drinking fruit juice. For the calories in one kid-size box of apple juice, you can enjoy an apple, orange, and a slice of watermelon. These whole foods will keep you satisfied much longer than that box of apple juice, so you'll eat less overall.

9.Be patient and persevere
It might take a week or two before you notice any changes, but they will steadily appear. After the first month you will be able to see the results and measure them in terms of looser fitting clothes.
Keeping your motivation up is one of the most difficult aspects of dieting. There will be days when healthy eating goes out the window and there will be weeks where you may not lose any weight – or put a little back on.

10. Switch from regular milk to 2%. If you already drink 2%, go down another notch to 1% or skim milk. Each step downward cuts the calories by about 20 percent. Once you train your taste buds to enjoy skim milk, you'll have cut the calories in the whole milk by about half and trimmed the fat by more than 95 percent.

The five most important problems about arthritis

What is arthritis?
Arthritis is not a single disease. The name arthritis means an inflammation of one or more joints. Arthritis is an inflammation of the joints usually caused by wear and tear; injury, or infection. Some are genetic. Its causes and consequences are many and varied. The inflammation is often accompanied by pain, swelling, redness and motion limitation. X-rays may show horrifying damage to the joints of people who feel no pain at all, or they may show relatively little damage in people who feel great pain.

What are the different types of arthritis?
There are more than 100 types of arthritis. There's osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, psoratic arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, systemic infectious arthritis, arthritis associated with a venereal disease and many others. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It is often referred to as wear and tear arthritis as it involves the thinning and breakdown of the cartilage lining, which cushions and protects the joints, where two bones meet. The bone may lose shape and thicken at the ends or produce bony spurs. It causes pain in the joints and surrounding soft tissues and limits the range of movement of a joint. Osteoarthritis affects many joints including the large, weight bearing joints of the hips and knees and also the spine, hands, feet and shoulders. There are several reasons for the development of osteoarthritis including age, being overweight, heredity factors, and joint damage from a previous injury or during early development of a joint. The severe pain of osteoarthritis can be very fatiguing and disabling.

Rheumatoid arthritis. This is an auto-immune disease in which the body's immune system (the body's way of fighting infection) attacks healthy joints, tissues, and organs. Occurring most often in women of childbearing age (15-44), this disease inflames the lining (or synovium) of joints. It can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, and loss of function in joints. When severe, rheumatoid arthritis can deform, or change, a joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects mostly joints of the hands and feet and tends to be symmetrical. This means the disease affects the same joints on both sides of the body (like both hands or both feet) at the same time and with the same symptoms. No other form of arthritis is symmetrical. About two to three times as many women as men have this disease.

Gout is a form of arthritis. The joints appear painful, tight and swollen. The pain is caused by needle shaped microcrystals which can destroy the joint cartilage. When a person has gout, they have higher than normal levels of uric acid in the blood. The body makes uric acid from the foods we eat. Too much uric acid causes deposits, called uric acid crystals, which form in the fluid and lining of the joints. If the kidneys don't work properly then you can't get rid of the uric acid in the urine as you should. The result is an extremely painful attack of arthritis. People often inherit gout and although we don't know why, Maori and Pacific island peoples are more likely to get gout. The joint most commonly affected is the big toe.

What causes arthritis?
There are many different causes of arthritis. Some are genetic, some lifestyle-related, and some environmental, such as bacteria and viruses. (The arthritis of Lyme disease, for instance, is caused by bacteria from an infected tick.) Still other causes aren’t yet known or completely understood.

For osteoarthritis, the major cause is often described as wear and tear. But the true cause is not quite so simple as that expression might make it seem. The cartilage in your joints is living tissue, and its cells are continually undergoing changes and repair. For reasons we don’t yet fully understand, as we get older our cartilage is more likely to become damaged and gradually lose its ability to heal itself.

What are the symptoms of arthritis?
Symptoms vary according to the form of arthritis. Each form affects the body differently. Arthritic symptoms generally include swelling and pain or tenderness in one or more joints for more than two weeks, redness or heat in a joint, limitation of motion of a joint, early morning stiffness, and skin changes, including rashes.

How to treat arthritis?
A very simple and effective arthritis treatment method is using heat as well as cold in different situations to get relief from the stiffness and pain in your joints. For heat treatment, using hot water bottles or a hot water pack and even a heat lamp over the exact spot where the pain is occurring will get you relief. A electric blanket, warm shower and even bathe will relieve you off your morning stiffness and start a new day on a more positive note.

For cold treatment, using cold packs over an inflamed and hot and tender joint should provide considerable relief, while in instances of severe pain, a physiotherapist may advise you a deep heat therapy treatment such as ultrasound. When applying different arthritis treatments, it is necessary to learn some new habits that will relieve your pain and help your body cope with arthritis and also mean not having to take drugs for relief.

Pain is a way in which the body warns you that something has gone wrong and you should pay attention these signals, and you must try and stop the activity before it further tires the joints and causes excess pain. Also try and plan your activities in a way that they do not end up causing you more pain. Another arthritis treatment you can use to get relief is to make sure that you only use your strongest muscles and joints. An example of this would be to use thigh muscles instead of the back muscles when lifting a heavy object, or using forearm muscles instead of the wrists to carry or lift or hold objects.

Prevention is better than cure

Out of a country’s health budget, a large proportion should be diverted from treatment to spending on health education and preventative measures.
The rising costs of health care have become an issue for many countries in the world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the state health budget be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment.

First of all, many kinds of diseases are preventable and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could prevent catching a cold if they dress warmly and get good rest when the weather first gets cold in the winter. But many people get sick because they fail to do so and have to spend much more money seeing a doct123 Another case in point is cancer, the leading cause of death in the world. But lung cancer, liver cancer and many other kinds of cancer could all be effectively prevented if people take measures for their health in an early stage. Small things such as smoking less or eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families from becoming bankrupt if the patients took measures for early cancer prevention.

In addition, health education also plays a key role in improving people’s health. By giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it.

However, emphasizing on disease prevention is not downplaying the significance of medical treatment. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different means toward the same e12

In conclusion, we could save money in health care and treat patients more successfully if our country uses more money on health prevention and education.

How to Keep Healthy

How to Keep Healthy
Nowadays more and more people are concerned about their health. But how to keep
healthy? Different people may give different answers to this question. In my opinion, it is essential to do the following.
First, it is absolutely necessary to take some exercise every day. Research shows that getting plenty of exercise make the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder. This strengthens the heart, reduces the chance of heart attack, and helps lower blood pressure. That's why more and more people are becoming active in various kinds of sports and exercises. Every morning many people get up early and take much exercise. Some practice shadowboxing and swordplay while others run, jog, walk or dance to music. In the afternoon, there are also many people keen on sports. Some play basketball or volleyball or table tennis, others go in for gymnastics or track events. Through sports and exercise, people become healthier and stronger.
Medical researchers have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat such as beef and pork because meat contains more fat than poultry and fish. Fat can build up in the arteries, block the flow of blood, and cause a heart attack or stroke.
Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is also an important way to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcohol injure one's health a great deal, and therefore should be given up. Unfortunately few people follow this advice.
If people follow these three ways of keeping fit, they greatly improve their health.

How to maintain a healthy lifestyle

Why should we care about nature? Should we care about it for its own sake — or for our sake, because it happens to make us happy or healthy? These might not seem like the brightest questions. Few people need convincing that the destruction of rain forests, the mass extinction of species and the melting of the ice sheets in Greenland would all be very bad things. Do we really need to list the reasons?

We do. After all, in many regards our species has already kissed nature goodbye, and we are better off for it. Technology has come to be more diverse than the biosphere. In 1867, Karl Marx observed that there were 500 types of hammer made in Birmingham, England. In 1988, Donald Norman, a cognitive scientist at the University of California, San Diego, suggested that the average American encounters 20,000 different kinds of artifacts in everyday life, which would be more than the number of animals and plants that we can distinguish. And right now, there are about 1.5 million identified species on Earth — impressive, but nothing compared to the more than 7 million United States patents.

This is mostly good news. No sane person would give up antibi¬otics and anesthesia, farming and the written word. Our constructed environments shield us from heat and cold and protect us from predators. We have access to food and drink and drugs that have been devised to stimulate our nervous systems in magnificent ways. We sleep in soft beds and have immediate access to virtual experiences from pornography to classical symphonies. If a family of hunter-gatherers were dropped into this life, they would think of it as a literal heaven.

Or maybe not. There is a considerable mismatch between the world in which our minds evolved and our current existence. Our species has spent almost all of its existence on the African savanna. While there is debate over the details, we know for sure that our minds were not adapted to cope with a world of billions of people. The life of a modern city dweller, surrounded by strangers, is an evolutionary novelty. Thousands of years ago, there was no television or Internet, no McDonald’s, birth-control pills, Viagra, plastic surgery, alarm clocks, artificial lighting or paternity tests. Instead, there was plenty of nature. We lived surrounded by trees and water and animals and sky.

This history has left its mark on our minds. Children are irrepressible taxonomizers, placing the world of distinct individuals into categories based on their appearance, their patterns of movement and their presumed deeper natures, and some psychologists have argued that the hard-wired capacity to organize and structure the world is specially adapted to nature: we are natural-born zoologists and botanists. We may also have evolved to get pleasure from certain aspects of the natural world. About 25 years ago, the Harvard biologist E. O. Wilson popularized the “biophilia” hypothesis: the idea that our evolutionary history has blessed us with an innate affinity for living things. We thrive in the presence of nature and suffer in its absence.

Our hunger for the natural is everywhere. It is reflected in art: the philosopher Denis Dutton, in his book “The Art Instinct,” suggests that popular taste in landscape painting has been shaped by preferences that evolved for the African savanna. The appeal of the natural is also reflected in where we most want to live. People like to be close to oceans, mountains and trees. Even in the most urban environments, it is reflected in real estate prices: if you want a view of the trees of Central Park, it’ll cost you. Office buildings have atriums and plants; we give flowers to the sick and the beloved and return home to watch Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel. We keep pets, which are a weird combination of constructed things (cats and dogs were bred for human companionship), surrogate people and conduits to the natural world. And many of us seek to escape our manufactured environments whenever we can — to hike, camp, canoe or hunt.

Wilson emphasizes the spiritual and moral benefits of an attachment to nature, warning that we “descend farther from heaven’s air if we forget how much the natural world means to us.” But there are more tangible benefits as well. Many studies show that even a limited dose of nature, like a chance to look at the outside world through a window, is good for your health. Hospitalized patients heal more quickly; prisoners get sick less often. Being in the wild re¬duces stress; spending time with a pet enhances the lives of everyone from autistic children to Alzheimer’s patients. The author Richard Louv argues that modern children suffer from “nature-deficit disorder” because they have been shut out from the physical and psychic benefits of unstructured physical contact with the natural world.

So the preservation of the natural world should be important to us. But how important? The psycholo¬gist Philip Tetlock has pointed out that many people talk about the environment as a “sacred value,” protected from utilitarian trade-offs — when the Exxon Valdez spilled nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil, 80 percent of the respondents in one poll said that we should pursue greater environmental protection “regardless of cost.” But he also points to the need to balance environmental concerns with social and political and personal priorities. (Few of these respondents would be willing to hand over their pensions for a more efficient cleanup of the Alaskan shoreline.) And even if we did value nature above everything else, we would still have to decide which aspects of nature we care about the most. You can see this in the debate over the creation of giant wind farms in the ocean or on hillsides. Proponents are enthusiastic about the cheap, green energy; critics worry about the loss of natural beauty and the yearly filleting of thousands of songbirds and ducks.

In the end, an indiscriminate biophilia makes little sense. Natural selection shaped the human brain to be drawn toward aspects of nature that enhance our survival and reproduction, like verdant landscapes and docile creatures. There is no payoff to getting the warm fuzzies in the presence of rats, snakes, mosquitoes, cockroaches, herpes simplex and the rabies virus. Some of the natural world is appealing, some of it is terrifying and some of it grosses us out. Modern people don’t want to be dropped naked into a swamp. We want to tour Yosemite with our water bottles and G.P.S. devices. The natural world is a source of happiness and fulfillment, but only when prescribed in the right doses.

You might think that technology could provide a simulacrum of nature with all the bad parts scrubbed out. But attempts to do so have turned out to be interesting failures. There is a fortune to be made, for instance, by building a robot that children would respond to as if it were an animal. There have been many attempts, but they don’t evoke anywhere near the same responses as puppies, kittens or even hamsters. They are toys, not companions. Or consider a recent study by the University of Washington psychologist Peter H. Kahn Jr. and his colleagues. They put 50-inch high-definition televisions in the windowless offices of faculty and staff members to provide a live view of a natural scene. People liked this, but in another study that measured heart-rate recovery from stress, the HDTVs were shown to be worthless, no better than staring at a blank wall. What did help with stress was giving people an actual plate-glass window looking out upon actual greenery.

All of this provides a different sort of argument for the preservation of nature. Put aside for the moment practical considerations like the need for clean air and water, and ignore as well spiritual worries about the sanctity of Mother Earth or religious claims that we are the stewards of creation. Look at it from the coldblooded standpoint of the enhancement of the happiness of our everyday lives. Real natural habitats provide significant sources of pleasure for modern humans. We intuitively grasp this, and this knowledge underlies the anxiety that we feel about nature’s loss. It might be that one day we will be able to replace the experience of nature with “Star Trek” holodecks and robotic animals. But until then, this basic fact about human pleasure is an excellent argument for keeping the real thing.
